Applying for Jobs

JOB SPECIFIC - We solicit applications for specific position vacancies, only. Therefore, all openings are posted separately. This is referred to as being Job Specific. In order to be considered for employment at The University of Alabama, we encourage you to apply for each position that you are interested in and qualified for.

JOB LISTINGS - The job opportunities list is updated daily and can be accessed daily via World Wide Web at http://jobs.ua.edu/.

  • Non-exempt (bi-weekly) jobs are advertised a minimum of five (5) working days.
  • Exempt (Administrative/ Professional) jobs are advertised a minimum of 21 calendar days for regular positions and 14 calendar days for temporary positions.

INTERNAL OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT

  • The University supports internal promotional opportunities. These opportunities are clearly displayed on our job lists and the website.
  • EMPLOYMENT OF INDIVIDUALS UNDER THE AGE OF 18.
    Department managers should be aware that there may be restrictions on the job duties or work schedules of employees under the age of 18. If you are a manager considering an applicant under the age of 18 for employment with the University, you should understand these restrictions.   • EMPLOYMENT SKILLS TESTING
    • Many positions at The University of Alabama require minimum levels of competence in computer software or specific office skills. The tests required for each position are listed in the job posting. Some skills tests only need to be passed once.  Once passed, the scores are valid indefinitely.  Other skills tests are used to demonstrate current proficiencies.  Scores on these skills tests are valid for up to two years.
    • Tests with Indefinite Validity:
      Scores achieved on the following skills tests will be valid indefinitely and no retesting will be required:
      • Data Entry/10 Key – This test measures an applicant's ability to key numeric data using a numeric keypad. There is a three (3) minute warm-up exercise and a ten (10) minute test.
      • Proofreading - This test measures an applicant's ability to find and correct errors in a document displayed on the screen.
      • Advanced Proofreading - This test measures an applicant's ability to find and correct errors in a more complex document displayed on the screen.

        Both Proofreading and Advanced Proofreading test the following elements:

        • Spelling
        • Grammar
        • Punctuation
        • Abbreviations
        • Capitalization
        • Number Usage
        • Possessives
        • Tenses
        • Plurals
    • Tests with Scores Valid for up to Two Years:
      Scores achieved on the following tests will be valid for a period of up to two years. In order to help ensure current proficiency, applicants who apply for, or are promoted/reclassified into, jobs requiring these skills tests will be required to have valid qualifying scores on file.
      • Keyboarding – This is a typing test used to determine an applicant's keyboarding speed and accuracy. There is a three (3) minute warm-up exercise and a five (5) minute timed typing test.
      • Microsoft Word 2007 – This test measures an applicant's ability to perform basic Word functions including, but not limited to: editing, formatting and navigating documents.
      • Microsoft Excel 2007 – This test measures an applicant's ability to perform basic Excel Spreadsheet functions including, but not limited to: editing, formatting and navigating spreadsheets.
      • Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 – This test measures an applicant's ability to perform basic PowerPoint functions including, but not limited to: editing, formatting and navigating presentations.
      • Microsoft Access 2007 – This test measures an applicant's skills commonly used database maintenance functions.
    • Employment testing will apply to all individuals including current University employees who are:
      • Applying for jobs which require skills tests;
      • Internally transferring or promoting into jobs that require skills tests; or
      • Incumbents in jobs which are reclassified to positions that require skills tests.
    • How to Schedule Employment Skills Tests
      If you are applying for a position that requires a skills test, be sure to contact the HR Service Center at (205) 348-7732 to schedule a convenient test date.  Please contact us if you need additional information about employment testing.
    • Instructions for Employment Skills Testing
      • Applicant calls/visits Service Center to schedule a skills testing appointment (348-7732).
      • Applicant reports to Rose Administration Building - Room G-69. Applicant must provide a valid photo I.D. at the time of check-in.
      • Please allow yourself ample time to locate a parking space on campus.
      • If you must cancel your appointment, we would appreciate a 24 hour notice. This will allow us the opportunity to schedule other appointments.
      • Please notify us in advance if you will require any accommodation.
    • Testing Deadlines
      To meet the minimum qualifications for a position, any required skills testing must be successfully completed by the closing date of the position.
    • Testing Frequency
      • Applicants will be permitted to take a test up to six times within a one year period (rolling year).
      • Applicants who do not initially pass a skills test with a score of at least 60% or 80%, whichever is applicable, will be permitted to take the test again when they have scheduled and prepared to pass the test.
      • Applicants who do not successfully pass the skills test (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint) on the second or any subsequent attempt, may NOT take the test again for a period of at least one month to allow time for them to improve their knowledge and skills.
    • Availability of Test Scores
      An applicant's current qualifying skills test scores are visible near the bottom of any on-line application. Qualifying skills test scores are posted to applicants' applications upon completion of the tests. (click on "View Application," scroll to bottom).
    • Basic Software Testing Qualifications for Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and/or PowerPoint
      • Employees who apply for, or are promoted/reclassified into, jobs requiring Microsoft skills tests must have valid test scores on file.
    • Advanced Software Testing Qualifications for Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and/or PowerPoint
      • Applicants for advanced level positions will have to achieve a minimum score of 80% on all required Microsoft skills tests.
      • Unless otherwise specified, all other positions that require skills testing will require applicants to achieve a minimum score of 60% on all required Microsoft skills tests.
  • Guidelines for Office Pool Jobs
    • For Applicants:
      Office Pool assignments can be full-time or part-time and cannot exceed 90 calendar days. Once you have completed an Office Pool assignment, please contact the HR Service Center if you wish to be considered for other Office Pool assignments.
    • For Hiring Departments
      Office Pool jobs are for departments with temporary short-term office support needs. Short-term is defined as up to 90 calendar days. By recruiting office pool jobs on an on-going basis, the Human Resource Service Center offers a pool of office support applicants to fill the short-term temporary needs of requesting departments.

      Departments needing short-term office help should call their assigned HR Partner and discuss the requirements needed and the approximate time frame of the assignment. Pool positions may be assigned full-time or part-time to any one department not to exceed 90 calendar days. Should a department need an employee longer than the 90 days, a temporary position should be recruited. Pool assignments may be terminated at any time during the 90 day period.

      NOTE: The use of temporary agencies for filling of temporary positions is used only in exceptional situations and must be approved by the department of Human Resources. Contact your assigned HR Partner in Human Resources.
